A Happy Event

Never had the habit of writing up on a movie review but so please pardon me if it gets too dry or if it doesn’t end up the way it’s supposed to be.  Partially, I am writing this because I think I owe it to “TheAsianParent” for this bloody awesome complimentary movie so.. the only thanks I could give in return is this.

First french movie and R21 movie I’ve watched so far and it is .. the best movie I’ve ever watched in my whole life.  Of course, some might beg to differ but in my opinion, this is one good hellva story that might just change my life forever.

This movie tells the life of a young couple madly, wildly in love and then proceeding to make a baby.. and of course, life after the baby comes along.  I must have cried at least 10 times throughout the movie.  They were young, wild and carefree.  It reminded me so much of who we used to be. (My husband and I in that case).  With nothing to worry besides having enough dough to have fun and make merry, no responsibilities, no two hoots!

PS: I have to say I was very much reminded of the man sitting next to me - it is a miracle how men tend to change when they know they have a baby coming along.  Guess it’s something even a lifetime of nagging can’t do! ;) Kudos to Fatherhood.

The young couple then decided to have a baby after being in a relationship for a while, she was a student and he rented videos for a living.  The movie played the cold harsh truth of a pregnancy - vomiting, the mood swings, the need for sex (for the ladies), the fear of sex (for the men), the worries of not having enough money, the new responsibilities and commitment taken up, the changes in a women body - of course talking about all that weight gain and puffiness, the waiting, the bad dreams, so on and so forth.

It was so intense for me because I could relate to her so well (being 7 months in my pregnancy now), it was EVERYTHING I am going through.  Pregnancy.. is a public and private affair all the same time.  People come up to congratulate you, wish you well, ask about the well being of the baby but nobody cares about how you really feel inside.

So then, came the crucial part.  The labour.  I nearly shat in my pants.  It was just.. bad.  The contractions, the pushing, the nervousness, the pain, the fear, the irritation, the anger, WOW, it was too much for me to take.

..

Until, the baby arrived.

I was sobbing silently in that dark theatre wondering how could anything be so beautiful?

I guess, the most difficult part wasn’t the labour after all, it was the bringing up of the child.  The couple were struggling to care for their baby without any help/family support (it wasn’t because it isn’t available, the female lead was just .. too bloody insistent).  She was turning in to a possessive mother, refusing to bottle feed (that means she only breast feed) even when she was running out of milk supply.

You know, I understand the goodness of breast feeding but I wouldn’t INSIST breast feeding. I mean, not everybody is capable of doing so and hey, it hurts, it takes away ANY sex appeal I am left with after birth - it’s just not sexy and well, I guess it destroys how my breast would look - and I heard it fucks your mind (hormonal issue)

Yes, there are definitely MORE benefits then my very selfish reasons but.. what I’m trying to say is, I believe every one should decide on their own and nobody should be pressured into doing something they’re not comfortable with.  If you ask me, I will try but if I find myself depressed doing it, I will stop - with immediate effect.  I want to be a happy mother!  Not hating my child every painful second!

..

Enough with the breast talk - the movie was really a cold tight slap of how life would change with a baby, all the sacrifices no parents talk about (I want to give them a big hug now), the time they spend on us, neglecting marriage.  Maybe it isn’t true for some parents but I’m sure I wouldn’t want to take my eyes off my first born.  I am very thankful for the reminder this movie gave me - Regardless of how much you love your child, remember to keep your marriage and love alive for it is the only thing your child would be grateful to you for - a complete and happy family to grow up in.

The spite and anger, the crying and sadness that was relayed in the movie because of all the many reasons.. was just freaky.  But the joy that a child brings, the innocent smile, the different growing stages, the unconditional love and so much more that I am not aware of.

Anyway, all I can say is, all parents to be, trying to be “parents to be”, parents should really catch this movie!  I give it a 4/5 star rating.  Only because it’s in french - but they’re so humourous you forget that fact - and because it’s just a tad too REAL for my liking.  I like to be in denial thinking that every thing is pink and rosy bwahahaha.

Ok! Adios.  I hope you guys enjoy the movie, if you would be watching it.

Movie starts showing in cinemas on the 12th Jan 2012!
